What is the difference between PNG transparency and GIF transparency?

PNG supports 256 levels of transparency per pixel (alpha channel), allowing smooth anti-aliased edges and semi-transparent effects. GIF only supports binary transparency — each pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent, creating jagged edges.

Do all browsers support PNG alpha transparency?

Yes. All modern browsers (including IE9+) fully support 32-bit RGBA PNG with alpha transparency. IE6 had issues, but that's no longer relevant.
