How do I verify a PNG has transparency?

Open in any image viewer — transparent areas show a checkerboard pattern. Programmatically: check for RGBA color type (color type 6) in the PNG header, or use sharp/Pillow to read the channel count (4 = RGBA).

Will CSS background-color show through the transparent areas?

Yes. Place the transparent PNG on any colored background and the background will show through the alpha channel. This is the main use case — logos and icons on variable-color backgrounds.
