Only for backward compatibility with systems that don't support XLSX (Excel 2003 and earlier, some legacy enterprise systems). For everything else, use XLSX — it's smaller, more secure, and better supported.
Can modern tools read XLS files?
Yes. Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets, SheetJS, and openpyxl all read XLS. However, some features (like conditional formatting rules) may not round-trip perfectly between XLS and XLSX.
