One channel — the same signal plays in both speakers. Stereo has two independent channels (left/right). Mono is common in voice recordings, phone calls, and some podcast formats.

How can I detect if a WAV is mono or stereo?

Check the numChannels field in the WAV header (offset 22): 1 = mono, 2 = stereo. In FFprobe: ffprobe -show_entries stream=channels file.wav.
